Charles S. Haight, Jr. joined the Journal's Editorial Board in 1991. After serving as a trial attorney in the Admiralty and Shipping section of the U.S. Department of Justice in Washington, D.C., he entered the New York City law firm of' Haight, Gardner, Poor & Havens as an associate and later was elevated to partner. In 1976, following nomination by President Gerald R. Ford, he was appointed a United States District Judge for the Southern District of New York. In 1995, he became a senior judge. Judge Haight holds a B.A. and an LL.B. from Yale University.
